Career Overview
During his 35+ year career, Isaiah Jackson has conducted orchestral concerts on six continents and held titled positions on four. His concerts have featured classical masterworks, rock, pop hits, gospel, and world music. Through his interest in modern music, numerous commissions have been granted to living composers whose works he has featured in concerts and events.
Maestro Jackson has shared the stage with international artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, André Watts, Maureen Forrester, Cissy Houston, Sarah Vaughan, Al Jarreau, Joseph Silverstein, and many others. He has performed before royalty including the Her Majesty the Queen of England, Princess Diana, Prince Charles, and Princess Margaret.
As Music Director of the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, London, England, Maestro Jackson led performances with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolf Nureyev.
While Principal Guest Conductor of the Queensland Philharmonic in Brisbane, Australia, he performed at the Sydney Opera House, and opened the Brisbane Biennial.
Work with Youth
His work with Youth Orchestras in Vienna, Perth and New York, and tour with the Asian Youth Orchestra and the late Yehudi Menuhin, have created a deep love and respect for young talent and the powerful effect of music on youth. During his career Maestro Jackson conducted thousands of concerts for teens, preteens and preschool children. He is the featured artist in a children's album he co-produced and the host and narrator in an educational television program featuring youth gospel choirs.
Teaching
Dr. Jackson has been a teacher at the famed Lincoln Center Institute and guest speaker and clinician at numerous professional development seminars for teachers and administrators of school-age children. At the university level, he has held positions as Artist in Residence, Scholar in Residence, Musician in Residence and Associate Professor of Conducting.
Honors
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to music and music education, Maestro Jackson has twice received Honorary Doctorate Degrees, received the coveted Signet Society Medal for Achievement in the Arts, The Reynolds Society Achievement Award from the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, and the Commonwealth of Virginia's First Governor's Award for Achievement in the Arts. He has been also been honored by the National Black Music Caucus and The National Conference.
Education
Dr. Jackson holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard University, Stanford University and a Doctor of Musical Arts from The Juilliard School. He is currently a W.E.B. Du Bois Fellow at Harvard University, Musician in Residence for The Memorial Church, Harvard University, Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music and visiting lecturer at Harvard University Extension School, and the Longy School, Cambridge, MA.
